Written by Jackie
Wednesday, 02 April 2014 15:26

As the national conversation over the Common Core State Standards continues to heat up, one non-profit and an indie filmmaker are hoping that their documentary will shed light on an issue that they believe is a largely unknown problem. The film "Building the Machine" is about how Common Core came to be and how it will affect education for years to come.

We will view the 40 minute movie and join in discussion with local Common Core expert Jeff Horn.

America has entered troubling times. The rule of law is crumbling. The massive expansion of Federal government power with its destructive laws and policies is of grave concern to many. But what can be done to quell the abuse of power by civil authority? Are unjust or immoral actions by the government simply to be accepted and their lawless commands obeyed? How do we know when the government has acted tyrannically? Which actions constitute proper and legitimate resistance?

In his book The Doctrine of the Lesser Magistrates: A Proper Resistance to Tyranny and a Repudiation of Unlimited Obedience to Civil Government, Pastor Matthew Trewhella places in your hands a hopeful blueprint for freedom. Appealing to history and the Word of God,Pastor Trewhella answers these questions and shows how Americans can successfully resist the Federal government’s attempts to trample our Constitution, assault our liberty, and impugn the law of God.

The doctrine of the lesser magistrates declares that when the superior or higher civil authority makes an unjust/immoral law or decree, the lesser or lower ranking civil authority has both the right and duty to refuse obedience to that superior authority. If necessary, the lower authority may even actively resist the superior authority. The doctrine of the lesser magistrates is a historic tool that provides proven guidelines for proper and legitimate resistance to tyranny, often without causing any major upheaval in society. The doctrine teaches us how to rein in lawless acts by government and restore justice in our nation.

Matthew Trewhella is the pastor of Mercy Seat Christian Church. He is a graduate of Valley Forge Christian College. He and his wife, Clara, have eleven children and nine grandchildren, and reside in the Milwaukee, Wisconsin area. His research and teaching on the lesser magistrate doctrine is reshaping the thinking of Americans. He was instrumental in publishing the Magdeburg Confession in 2012 - the first English translation of the document since it was written in 1550.

"Choice of Representation" with Special Guest Jim Mueller
Written by Jackie
Monday, 03 March 2014 09:55

An October 2013 Gallup Poll found that 60% of Americans want a third political party. Whether or not you're one of them, please join The Wisconsin 9/12 Project on Wednesday, March 5, at 7 PM for a challenging and thought-provoking presentation and discussion on the topic of direct representation.

According to Wikipedia, "direct representation or proxy representation is a proposed form of representative democracy where each representative's vote is weighted in proportion to the number of citizens who have chosen that candidate to represent them. This is in contrast to conventional forms of representative democracy such as the winner-take-all system, where the winner of a plurality of votes in a given district, party or other grouping of voters goes on to represent all voters in that group, or the proportional representation system where the number of representatives allotted to each party or political faction is in rough proportion to the number of voters supporting each faction.

"Direct representation is seen by its supporters as an optimal compromise between pure direct democracy and conventional representative democracy, as legislative decisions will more closely reflect the pure will of the people yet will still be carried out by a "wise" group of informed and accountable elected representatives. Direct representation removes the problem of district gerrymandering because the balance of power in a legislative body will be precisely the same regardless of where district lines are drawn. It also avoids disenfranchisement of slight minorities in cases where the electorate is split nearly evenly in its choice for representation, yet the preferred representative of only one faction must be chosen to represent the entire electorate of a party or district."

Regardless of where you stand on the topic when you arrive and when you leave, this is sure to be a compelling and provocative meeting that you won't want to miss!

Jim Mueller is an advocate for the recognition of the unalienable Civil Right to Representation of Choice, along with the implementation of that right through at-large placements of proxies. Jim was a supervisor in the Town of Middleton and then its Administrator/Clerk/Treasurer. He served as the Chair of the Libertarian Party of Wisconsin and as a candidate for governor in 1998, was a three time candidate for State Assembly at one point garnering 49% of the vote. He also chaired a congressional campaign that garnered 49.7% of the vote.

Jim attended Clairville School, a one-room rural grade school, graduated from Oshkosh High School, the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and the University of Wisconsin Law School. He has had a diverse career and accumulated valuable experience, having grown up on a subsistence farm, growing asparagus and bees. He has also worked at a full service gas station, as staff inside the State Senate, for a Bank Trust Company, as a Municipal Consultant, a land developer, and as a mortgage broker.
